How to Apply to ADSAI

2023 applications

As in 2022 there will be two rounds of admissions for the 2023 ADSAI PhD program. Both will be completed before October 2023, as the new PhD cohort will officially start on November 1st 2023. The panels evaluating applicant across both rounds will be likely different, and you can apply multiple times if you wish so.

ADSAI PhD positions are either free-topic, where the student names a superviser and a topic of choice (in agreement with the supervisor), or project-based, where the position is already linked to a research project and a supervisor. The amount of the two types of positions might change across rounds of applications, and every candidate is suggested to check the list of available positions before applying (reported below).

First round of applications (closed: results are available here)

  • Opening: May 12th, 2023
  • Closing: June 15th, 2023, 13.00 CEST
  • Positions: 19, of which 14 project-based.

Second round of applications (closed: results are available here)

  • Opening: July 21st, 2023
  • Closing: August 21st, 2023, 13.00 CEST
  • Positions: 18, of which 2 are reserved.

The ADSAI Open Day recording is available for download.

Who can apply

Candidates must have acquired a “Laurea magistrale” or equivalent foreign title (giving access to the Doctoral program in the country in which it is issued) by October, 31st 2023

When and how to apply

The application must be submitted through the on line procedure at https://esse3.units.it/Home.do by 13.00 CEST of August 21st, 2023 (see the tutorial).

You will need to include (see here for details and templates)

  1. proof of identity (e.g. passport)
  2. curriculum vitae et studiorum focusing on experience prior to the PhD and on degree thesis activity (description of techniques acquired, personal contribution, etc)
  3. university qualifications (including transcript of records)
  4. thesis abstract (please follow this template)
  5. (optional) publications

All the documents must be translated in Italian or English if issued in a different language.

For further details see the general call for application and the specific call for ADSAI.

Evaluation

Applications will be evaluated by a panel of professors/lecturers and experts. The September 2023 admission panel is:

Selection Criteria

Each applicant is first scored a maximum of 30 points based on academic qualifications. Ranking metrics are:

  • curriculum vitae et studiorum, publications and exams (24 points)
  • thesis abstract (6 points)

Applicants are automatically shortlisted and invited for interview (in person or remotely) only if at least 15/30 points are achieved. At the interview, a maximum of other 70 points are assigned, with a minimum of 45/70 points required to be considered eligible for ADSAI recruitment. The interview aims at understanding the motivation and the background of the candidate as well as his/her research interests. At the interview the candidate will also express his/her preferences for specific grants (see below).
